Reading the ZenBusiness Renewal Before You Buy the First Year

An interest declaration belongs at the top of a comparison rather than at the bottom. Massachusetts Registered Agent.co produced this page, occupies one column of the table inside it, and earns revenue when a reader agrees with the conclusion. Treat the paragraphs about our own service as an interested party's case. The ZenBusiness figures came off that company's published rates and can be verified independently in about two minutes.

Where ZenBusiness Is Ahead of Us

On product design, comfortably. Their platform consolidates formation, compliance tracking, and incoming agent documents into a single account with an interface that has plainly been through several rounds of thought. A buyer who wants an operating console for the entire business, with the agent role occupying one panel of it, is buying something we do not sell and have no intention of selling.

A Two-Rate Structure, Read in Full

Purchased as a standalone product rather than bundled into a formation order, ZenBusiness agent service is $99 plus state fees for the first term and $199 annually thereafter. Both are disclosed. Neither is misleading on its own. The reading error is treating the opening figure as the price of the arrangement.

Massachusetts entities retain a resident agent continuously for as long as they remain on the register, which makes the recurring rate the operative one. The duty performed does not change across those years. An agent's obligation to be reachable at a Massachusetts street address through business hours is fixed by law and identical whether the invoice reads $99 or $199.

Six hundred dollars over seven years, with the underlying obligation defined the same way for whichever provider holds it.

One Rate, Renewed at That Rate

Our structure contains a single number. $99 covers the year, and the renewal is $99 because a second-tier rate was never designed into the plan. Included rather than metered: same-day scanning of anything served on us in Massachusetts, email notification as it happens, our street address standing in the public record in place of yours, and an alert before the anniversary on which the $500 annual report ($520 electronically) falls due.

The honest limit of that claim is easy to state. $99 is not the lowest published rate in the Commonwealth, because BetterLegal advertises $90. It is among the lowest, and it is one of the few that reads the same in year seven as it did at signup.

Where the ZenBusiness Appointment Actually Ends

Massachusetts uses its own vocabulary for the office, calling the holder a resident agent, and eligibility comes from M.G.L. c. 156C § 5. Three categories qualify: an individual resident of the Commonwealth, a domestic corporation, and a foreign corporation cleared to transact business here. Professional agent services satisfy that test as a matter of course, which is why price rather than qualification is what separates them.

Moving the appointment takes one unnumbered Statement of Change of Resident Agent/Resident Office, which the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Corporations Division accepts by either of two routes. What the state charges depends entirely on which route it arrives by: nothing electronically, $25 by mail or at the counter. The Commonwealth is pricing the medium, not the decision behind it.

Sequence matters more than timing here. The form identifies an incoming agent, so engagement precedes filing, and the ZenBusiness account stays live until the Corporations Division record displays the replacement.
