What $249 Buys at the Corporations Division

Honest resident agent representation in Massachusetts for $99/year. Includes the address used on filings, same-day scanning of legal mail, and reminders for state deadlines.

This comparison is not neutral and says so at the outset. Massachusetts Registered Agent.co sells the $99 service appearing opposite LegalZoom throughout the page. The LegalZoom side is drawn strictly from published pricing, because a competitor's rate is the one part of this that is not ours to characterize.

Why the Premium Has Buyers

LegalZoom is the only company in this category with genuine consumer recognition, built over two decades of advertising, and dismissing that would be a cheap move. Choosing the familiar option is a rational response to uncertainty. When an owner has no way to evaluate a dozen unfamiliar vendors, the one name they already know carries information, even if most of what it carries is marketing spend. We are one of the unfamiliar ones and we are aware of it.

$249, Renewing on Its Own

The rate for registered agent service is $249 a year. It renews automatically, and a July 2026 review located no first-year discount attached to it anywhere. Credit where it belongs: that is a flat structure, and flat structures are far easier to budget than teasers that double at the first renewal.

It is also the highest flat annual figure in this market. Measured against $99, the annual difference is $150, and automatic renewal means the difference recurs without anyone having to decide again.

The $99 Column, Itemized

Ready when you are. Ordering takes about five minutes.

A Massachusetts street address occupying the resident agent line of your public record. Service of process scanned into your portal on the day it is received, with an email leaving at the same moment. Deadline alerts ahead of the anniversary on which the annual report falls due, which Massachusetts prices at $500 through the mail and $520 over the electronic channel. One product at checkout. One optional extra, $15 per item, should you want ordinary business mail imaged as well, and it appears here rather than on some later invoice.

There is a claim we decline to make. BetterLegal publishes $90 a year, so the lowest sticker in Massachusetts is not ours. Ours is among the lowest, it includes the scanning instead of charging separately for it, and it does not change shape at renewal.

The Statement That Moves the Appointment Off LegalZoom

Nothing in Massachusetts law binds an LLC to the agent it appointed first, and nothing in the fee schedule makes leaving expensive. The governing provision is M.G.L. c. 156C § 5A, covering changes of resident agent and resident office, and the Commonwealth implements it through a single form carrying no number, styled the Statement of Change of Resident Agent/Resident Office.

Fee depends on the channel and on nothing else.

How you file What Massachusetts charges
Electronically $0
Mail or walk-in $25
Fax $25 plus a $6 expedite charge

That structure is worth noticing. The same government adds a mandatory $20 to file your annual report electronically and subtracts $25 to change your agent electronically. Whatever the reasoning behind it, the practical effect is that the exit from a $249 subscription is a filing you do not pay for.

The procedure runs in a fixed order.

  1. Engage the incoming agent, since the form has to name one and cannot honestly be signed before that name exists.
  2. Enter your LLC's exact registered name, then the successor's name and Massachusetts street address.
  3. Submit electronically to the office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Corporations Division.
  4. Pull up your entity record and confirm the new agent has replaced the old one.
  5. Cancel the LegalZoom auto-renewal only after that confirmation appears.

Step five sits at the end deliberately. Cancelling a subscription before the record updates is how owners end up with a stretch of days where no agent is on file, and there is no upside whatsoever to that ordering. Reversed, the record stays covered throughout.

One related duty a professional agent does not discharge for you: the LLC itself must maintain an office within the Commonwealth where its required records are kept, which is a separate obligation from the agent's own office address. Our change of agent walkthrough covers the form in detail.
